Mastering the Art of Engineering

How to make a Camshaft

This video series will show you how camshafts are made in the Kelford Cams factory. Starting from a blank piece of billet, through to machining, hardening and grinding the cam into a final product.

Kelford Cams have been manufacturing high performance camshafts and valvetrain components for modified engines worldwide since 1969.

The process has changed a lot over the years and now uses state-of-the-art CNC equipment. Check it out below:

MILL-TURN MACHINE

Crafting precision with every turn. Our master machinist, Rupert, meticulously monitors and programs our advanced Doosan machine, ensuring flawless cuts and setting the foundation for camshafts that exceed all performance standards.

A mill-turn machine is a hybrid CNC machine that combines milling and turning functions into one machine. Mill-turn machines are ideal for Kelford Cams to produce complex engine parts that require multiple setups

INDUCTION HARDENING

Mike and Thomas take us through the hardening stage of making a high performance camshaft. This is a crucial process that uses an electromagnetic induction hardening machine.

Here's what's covered:
1. Induction hardening: using an electromagnetic field to target the lobes and journals.
2. The tempering process of quenching to ensure the perfect hardness
3. What happens next: prepping camshafts for grinding and finishing.

JOURNAL GRINDING

Thomas is here to give you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Shigiya CNC camshaft grinder to grind the lobes on a few camshafts.

This is a unique opportunity to see the camshaft grinding process up close. Thomas is here to walk us through the operation and share insights into how this machine can achieve perfectly accurate bearing journals every time.
